a sanctuary in time
On Tuesday I had five wisdom teeth extracted and I've been reveling in recuperation ever since. I really don't think the procedure could have gone any better, such a relief! Here are a few things I've been enjoying in my down time...
A thoughtful friend sent me both seasons of Downton Abbey (which I'd never seen) and I am hooked!
New issues of Anthology and Kinfolk magazines. There is an article entitled A Quiet Life in Kinfolk by Julie Pointer that is especially wonderful.
A surprise of fresh blooms in tangerine and deep pink on my bedside table.
Listening to Natalie Merchant's Leave Your Sleep. An album of songs adapted from 19th and 20th century poetry.
Revisiting the world of Jane Austen. Do you have a favorite?
A dog who is an excellent nap companion until he takes over the bed entirely and, well, even then.
Gazing out an open window to the garden where a pleasing rain drizzles as I type and sunlight begins to come into view.
Carrying this poem in my pocket.

I should carry a poem in my pocket. I like that idea. Have you ever memorized a poem? It is a wonderful companion to chant when walking or somewhere, written in the brain. My brother used to quote the beginning of 'Paul Revere's RIde' by Longfellow to me, long long ago, and I finally thought it would be funny to memorize it so I could continue the quote (and surprise him.) So I have most of it memorized and it gives me chills to say it to myself on my walks. It think it's time I memorized some new ones. xo
isn't downton abbey great? as my brother put it when i was watching one evening, "you are steeped in manor intrigues." :)
brooke ~ i know "this much i do remember" by billy collins and "a blessing" by james wright by heart. there's also a short poem called "separation" by w.s. merwin that's imprinted on my heart and bits of walt whitman's "leaves of grass." there are so many more i'd love to memorize. i'm going to look up "paul revere's ride!"
brittany ~ yes, i'm a little late to the game but so glad i was introduced to it. now, however, it seems like an impossible wait for the next season. :)
Five wisdom teeth?? Holy Moly. I didn't know that was possible. I'll most likely be getting mine out very soon - hopefully Downton Abbey Season 3 is out by then!

Five wisdom teeth! Wow. I hope all is feeling very well in your mouth now.
I watched part of the first season of Downton Abbey after seeing it recommended by so many people. I enjoyed it, but had to return it to the library before I could finish. It's on my list of things to continue. (Oh! I just realized that it's probably on Netflix, which I signed up for recently. I bet I can watch it on my own now!)
By the way, I just bought an edition of Kinfolk! I saw it in a coffee shop that also sold lots of wonderful magazines and it looked so lovely and heartwarming that I had to buy it. The guy said that they had just gotten it in after trying for a long time and they were really excited to be able to carry it.
cortnie ~ several people told me beforehand that their experience was much easier than anticipated. this was true for me and I hope for you too!
elizabeth ~ the first season is on netflix on demand and if they don't have the second yet just let me know and I'll send mine your way. happy you have discovered kinfolk and certain you are enjoying it!
I love Downton Abbey, have only seen S.1. Waiting for 2 to appear magically on Netflix (must remember to check Netflix...).
Jane Austen...Pride and Prejudice. Always been my favorite.
Natalie Merchant...sigh...seeing her perform with the Colorado Symphony this summer at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Should be a magical night.
Through your photos I imagine your home is the most peaceful and beautiful place on the planet.
I miss you... :-)
